Innovation, entrepreneurship and a startup mentality are to be commended, especially in today’s economic climate. Anyone wanting to grow a business, contribute to the economy and create jobs should be encouraged.

It’s not easy though, fighting for business, taking risks and facing “do or die” moments. On top of this, there are many hidden costs and financial demands that a lot of business owners don’t consider when they’re starting out.

Many things are obvious –  space to rent or buy, any furniture you need for your office or unit,  computers and other bills. But other costs crop up and can mount up,  so make sure you budget for things such as the following;

A printer and paper to print on/ink to print with. Does this sound stupid? A regular supply of paper and ink can become costly.

Memberships to key organisations, networks or events that will keep you up to date in your industry and let you meet your peers and/or potential clients. Starting up a business is hard and can feel lonely at first – these networks can be a vital life line.

Licences for things like Microsoft Office. You need to buy the licences for everyone you employ who will be using the package or software. If you don’t budget for these costs they can quickly start eating in to your profits.

Stuff for the office. Soap? Loo rolls? Washing up liquid? Will you provide tea for your staff? Pens? All these things need to be kept stocked up. If you’re renting in a serviced building a lot of this will be taken care of, but there are still consumables such as stationery to think about.

Hidden marketing costs. Have you budgeted for business cards? You’ve probably set money aside for a website, but have you factored promoting it and optimising it for search? Venn Digital, Search Optimisation specialists, frequently speak to small businesses who haven’t budgeted for SEO, but without it your website will be lost in Google.

The iPhone 4S has suffered a lot of negative press since its launch due to its similar appearance to the iPhone 4. However, upon closer inspection it seems that the phrase still waters run deep is very apt. The phone may look exactly the same but the innovations Apple has gone through push the phone to the very top of the slanted smartphone pyramid. Apple’s ability to innovate and have their own take on certain aspects of the phone has meant that they have managed to leave the chasing pack for dead. Fortunately, the world has realised this in the previous week and we’ve seen invigoration renewed in the phone. Mark Hirst, the Managing Director at Best Mobile Contracts has said, ‘Apple, with the release of the 4S now has a dual core smart-phone in line with the likes of HTC, Samsung and Motorola. Where Apple wins through is with the introduction of the iCloud, enabling flawless synching between all its devices.’ So what’s making people excited? Well as you may have gathered the iCloud feature is one of the most important aspects the phone has to offer. This feature allows you to sync all you information, from documents, to photos, to most importantly music from iTunes to the iCloud. The iCloud feature, however is much more well thought out than many other cloud services and people won’t have to upload their large music files to the Internet. Apple uses a track IDs to ensure the users can play directly from their iPhones without the need to upload. This means music is available anywhere that there is a network or connection. Apple has also helped in this area and has added a new dual antenna to the phone. This is all a giant leap for Apple after the issues with connections that came about with the iPhone 4. These antennas switch between each other depending on the strongest signal and this all means that the phone is constantly in good signal when it can be. The new iTunes 10.5 aids all of this and though not a giant leap is also a nice little addition to the new iOS operating system and just like a lot of other Apple iPhone 4s features makes the phone all the tighter. iPhone 4S deals are also competitively priced considering that this is the most advanced smartphone on the market. Overall, we see the iPhone as one of the best music playback devices, with the mix of internal memory and iCloud sync it has an unparalleled amount of room for music and so will keep those who want this to be a strong point in their portable device happy.

With the hundreds of thousands of applications already available, it is sometimes hard to believe that there are still some things – important things – that we have had to wait for on our Android powered smart phones.
One of the most eagerly anticipated applications for Android phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S is the BBC iPlayer, but now that the wait is over. Over the last few years the iPlayer has become a must have for internet users as it allows you to watch any of the BBC’s award winning programmes online if you happened to miss it when it was on the box.
Add this to hundreds of episodes of old shows and you get yourself a brilliant companion that means we are no longer a slave to the television schedules. Now the iPlayer came onto Android last month and has already attracted a huge amount of attention on the fast growing operating system.
Before you get too excited though, there is a drawback, and it is a big one. The iPlayer will only be available to phones which run on the Android 2.2 software and also the application needs Adobe’s Flash to work. This is a massive disappointment to millions of Android phone owners out there who will not be able to access the iPlayer as their software is not up to date or does not have Flash installed.
Daniel Danker from the BBC insited that the iPlayer will have “A simple and intuitive design with high picture quality and personalised favourites (making the most of the touch-screen UI, and a popular feature on the website)” but it still uses Flash to stream video and this will disappoint a great deal of people, including owners of phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S which, having been released a year ago, does not have the up to date software needed.
Although this should be brilliant news and a truly ground breaking moment. One cannot help but feel slightly let down that iPlayer for Android is only available to a minority of Android customers. Head over to phones4u today to see all the best phone deals

Anyhow, RIM appear to have woken up to this fact and are apparently doing something about it in relation to their most current releases. The Blackberry Torch, and also the Blackberry Playbook. The Playbook being RIM’s effort at rivalling the Apple iPad, and many are saying it is a great deal better than the iPad well if you’re simply talking about the things that come on it as stock options, because as we all know the applications on the Blackberry models are pretty naff and then to tell the truth really the only people that stand any kind of chance of rivalling what Apple have made with their application store are Apple.

The Torch definitely seems to be how RIM envisions their two biggest selling devices to look when blended to one handset, the ‘curvaceous’ edges of the Blackberry Curve and also the ‘boldness’ of the Blackberry Bold. A number of people are saying that the Torch is just as good as the iPhone, which will be a huge boost for RIM as they go in search of becoming the front-runners in the smart-phone market.

If you like the sound of these Blackberry handsets and more to the point the Torch then I am sure that if you have a good research you will be able to find some really good Blackberry torch deals around on the high-street.

The HTC Desire is a name that has been thrown around the market in a ridiculous fashion, but upon closer inspection of this phone all of the so-called hype could be considered as justified.
With an intensely fast 1GHz processor this handset has no snail of an operating system. As one of the fastest operating systems on the market this processor offers power beyond the necessities of the standard user.
With dimensions measuring at 119×60x11.9mm and weighing in at 135g it is not necessary a small or light phone but these characteristics may be forgiven by those who experience this super fast processor.
HTC have also included a few more surprise upgrades for those using older HTC models, including an extra 64MB RAM and physical buttons that free up screen space for other vital functions. The external design of the phone also seems to have undergone a change for the better, as the handset seems more logical to use and more stylish than older models.
The Desire seems to have subtly set some of the parameters expected of the newer smart phone models and forced other companies to think differently about what is important to the smart phone user. HTC have developed several characteristics in this phone that are blatantly attractive qualities that smart phone users look for; attractive external design, satisfactory processing power and a logical operating system.
The conceptual approach of HTC Desire with this handset has firmly set the Desire in the minds of smart phone consumers and now, with a name as synonymous as iPhone or Samsung, HTC will be expected to match and best their opponents in a market thriving with innovative thought and cutting edge concepts. A track record such as HTC’s gives confidence that they shouldn’t fail to surprise.
